Celebrate Food 91TV Prevention Week with the NC Composting Council (NCCC) for an inspiring look at how communities across North Carolina are turning food waste into opportunity. Join us later this month for a special webinar highlighting four organizations using NCCC grant funding to prevent food waste, build healthy soils, strengthen local food systems and create hands-on learning opportunities in their communities across North Carolina.

From school gardens and community food hubs to farms and local community composting programs, this year’s grantees are demonstrating food sovereignty, and what’s possible when food waste prevention is rooted in community.

During the showcase, you’ll hear from:

Bountiful Cities – Based in Asheville, Bountiful Cities is expanding composting infrastructure at the Pearson Food Hub and two public school gardens. The project will increase composting capacity, address rodent issues, provide collection buckets for households and classrooms, and add educational signage– helping students and community members connect composting with soil health, food security, and environmental stewardship.

Happy Roots – Serving Salisbury and Rowan County, Happy Roots is taking its food waste diversion program to the next level with a new Earth Tub composting system. Grant funding will support the concrete pad needed to expand their infrastructure, allowing Happy Roots to accept more food waste, service additional clients, and produce more compost for its growing network of gardens and educational programs.

Toxic Free NC – Through its Women of Color Farmers Network, Toxic Free NC is supporting up to 10 member farms with composting systems as farmers collaborate to launch Rooted Blends, a locally grown herbal spice blend. The project will improve soil health while helping beginning farmers grow high-quality herbs and build stronger, more sustainable farm businesses.

Zealous Empowering Nurturer, Inc. (ZEN) – In Charlotte, ZEN is expanding its Compost Collective, transforming local food waste into nutrient-rich compost for community gardens, schools, and senior-living centers. New composting infrastructure and educational materials will help residents and local restaurants participate in a community-powered model that connects food waste prevention with food security.

Together, these projects show that food waste prevention is about more than keeping food out of the landfill. It’s about building healthy soil, supporting farmers, educating the next generation, strengthening communities, and creating resilient local food systems!
