Isolate the Energy, Secure the Space: Utilizing LOTO for Confined Space Reclassification

Post-collection facilities rely on heavy machinery鈥攕uch as balers, compactors, shredders, sorters, and conveyor systems鈥攚here unexpected startup or energy release poses severe injury risks. Many of these equipment components also meet OSHA鈥檚 definition of a permit-required confined space due to restricted access, non-continuous occupancy, and underlying physical or atmospheric hazards.
Together, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) and confined space protocols form the primary line of defense against critical workplace hazards. This session explores how implementing effective LOTO procedures allows facilities to safely reclassify permit-required confined spaces under OSHA standards. Learn how eliminating mechanical and stored energy hazards enables team members to perform routine maintenance and jam-clearing safely without triggering full permit-required confined space requirements.
