Dallas has issued its first citations stemming from potential code violations detected by artificial intelligence-powered cameras mounted on city trash trucks, as officials face questions about the program’s impact on homeowners and privacy.
A September 8 city memo says 57 citations have been issued at 34 properties after camera detections were reviewed and confirmed by code officers. The city has also sent thousands of property owners notices about potential violations.
The cameras, operated by City Detect, are mounted on bulk trash collection trucks and photograph properties as crews travel through neighborhoods. The system uses artificial intelligence to identify potential code violations and generate “blight scores” that help Code Compliance prioritize properties for review. City records show the cameras have identified potential violations at thousands of addresses since becoming operational.
