The Kosciusko County Solid 91TV Management District discussed a proposal for a permanent tire recycling solution. “We are at a place that we are just giddy about here,” said Tom Ganser, executive director of KC Recycling. “Now that we’ve got that nice paved driveway … let’s talk about bringing a tire solution for Kosciusko County solid waste here.”

Ganser presented a proposal from Liberty Tire for a tire “cage,” which is 7 feet wide, 7 feet tall and 16 feet deep. The cage, if approved, would be staged behind the household hazardous waste building for access via the paved driveway.

The implementation of the cage would also mean the elimination of the Tire Week events, as residents of Kosciusko County would be able to bring in tires year-round for free, pending a determined limit per household. The cage would need to be tarped to prevent excess water from creating a breeding ground for mosquitoes, as the Indiana Department of Environmental Management requires tire collections to be stored in covered containers, Ganser stated.
