RouteSmart – A FedEx Company, officially celebrated the expansion and renovation of its corporate headquarters on Sept. 2 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Prominent federal, state, and local officials, community partners, and regional business leaders attended.

Located at 8850 Stanford Boulevard in Columbia, the newly renovated facility more than doubles RouteSmart’s previous footprint. The expansion reflects the company’s long-term commitment to Maryland and Howard County, where RouteSmart has anchored its global operations and driven logistical innovation for more than 40 years.

The celebratory event included remarks from RouteSmart leadership, local business representatives, and key government officials. It concluded with the official ribbon-cutting, guided tours of the new collaborative office space, and networking opportunities.

“This expansion represents much more than an investment in our physical office,” RouteSmart President Larry Levy said. “It is an investment in our employees, our clients, and the community we have proudly called home for more than four decades. As our company continues to grow, this renovated headquarters gives our team a modern, collaborative environment where we can continue developing innovative solutions for the organizations we serve.”

A key highlight of the celebration was the presence of RouteSmart’s founding partners, who pioneered the early mathematics and vehicle routing algorithms that transformed how the logistics, utility, and public works sectors operate globally. In addition to Levy, they included co-founders Michael Ball, Ph.D., Arjang Assad, Ph.D., and Bruce Golden, Ph.D. A fifth co-founder, Larry Bodin, Ph.D., could not attend.

The morning ceremony brought together a dynamic group of community and economic leaders who spoke to the business’s local and global impact. Guests included:

  • Shawn MacInnes, President of the Columbia Association
  • Lori Kleppin of the Howard County Chamber of Commerce
  • Brandee Ganz, Chief Administrative Officer for the Office of Howard County Executive Dr. Calvin Ball
  • Delegate Gabriel M. Moreno, Maryland House of Delegates, District 13
  • Ricky Powell-Graves, Regional Coordinator for Central Maryland from the Office of U.S. Senator Angela Alsobrooks.
  • Deputy Secretary Stephen Rice of the Maryland Department of Commerce.
  • Eva Lewis, District Director for the Office of U.S. Representative Sarah Elfreth (3rd Congressional District).

During the event, RouteSmart received commemorative citations from Maryland Gov. Wes Moore’s Office, the Department of Commerce, Congresswoman Elfreth’s office, and the Howard County Chamber.

The newly expanded headquarters have been meticulously redesigned to support RouteSmart’s growing team and evolving workspace needs. The upgraded layout features a major increase in private workstations, large, state-of-the-art conference and training rooms to support client learning, upgraded common spaces and kitchen facilities, and an outdoor balcony. By placing cross-functional teams in closer proximity and providing modern spaces to meet and brainstorm, the facility is optimized to enhance daily operational efficiency and support the next generation of route planning technology.
