What collection truck drivers face on the route and at the landfill working face.

Driving a garbage truck does not usually come up when people talk about dangerous jobs. Logging, fishing, roofing—those get the reputation. However, the numbers tell a different story. Federal labor statistics have repeatedly ranked refuse and recyclable material collectors among the 10 most fatal civilian occupations in the country. In 2023, the fatality rate for the job trailed only logging, commercial fishing, and roofing. Over the past decade, transportation incidents—a driver struck by a vehicle, a collision, a worker thrown from the truck—have accounted for close to three-quarters of the deaths in this line of work, and injury rates run nearly double the average across private industry.

Behind those numbers are two very different work environments that a driver moves between during a single shift. There is the public road, where the danger comes from traffic, pedestrians, and the mechanics of the truck itself. And there is the landfill working face, a crowded, unpaved, constantly shifting patch of ground where collection trucks share space with bulldozers and compactors. Each one comes with its own set of risks, and neither gets the attention it probably deserves.

On the Route
The single biggest threat to a collection driver is not the load or the equipment—it is traffic. Being a slow-moving vehicle that stops every few hundred feet puts a truck constantly at odds with drivers who will not slow down, will not move over, or follow so closely that the crew cannot safely swing out a lifting arm. Some municipalities have reported a rise in aggressive driving around collection crews in recent years, including motorists mounting curbs or forcing unsafe passes on narrow streets.

Falling from the rear riding step has historically been one of the most common single causes of death in this job. Safety standards limit how far and how fast a truck can travel with someone riding the step, but fatigue, wet or icy footing, and the sheer repetition of stop-and-go collection work all raise the odds of a fall—often straight into the path of the truck’s own rear wheels.

Backing up is its own hazard. Routes frequently call for a truck to reverse into a driveway, an alley, or a dead-end street, and the blind spot behind a fully loaded vehicle is enormous. A spotter helps, but only if hand signals are followed exactly and the spotter never drifts out of the driver’s line of sight.

Weather makes everything worse. Rain, snow, ice, and fog stretch out stopping distances, turn curbs and pavement slick, and cut visibility for the driver and everyone around the truck. Heat brings a different problem—dehydration and heat stress build up over a shift that has a crew in and out of the cab dozens of times.

Then there is the wear and tear that never shows up in a crash report. Lifting, dragging, and hoisting heavy or awkward containers—sometimes loaded well past what is recommended—combined with constant bending, twisting, and jumping on and off the truck, adds up to some of the highest musculoskeletal injury rates of any occupation. Studies of municipal waste crews have found more than half reporting shoulder problems alone. Long, irregular shifts bring fatigue into the mix, dulling exactly the kind of split-second reaction a driver needs when a pedestrian steps off a curb or a car cut in unexpectedly.

At the Landfill Working Face
Once a truck pulls into the landfill, the danger changes shape entirely. The working face—sometimes called the tipping face or active face—is the moving edge of the landfill where incoming loads get dumped, then immediately pushed, spread, and compacted by heavy machinery. People in the industry often call this the hot zone, and for good reason: it packs more equipment, more vehicle movement, and more blind spots into a small area than almost anywhere else in the waste-handling chain.

At any given moment, that patch of ground might have collection trucks, transfer trailers, dozers, compactors, and other service vehicles all maneuvering at once, sometimes with independent haulers or customers mixed in too. Well-run sites keep wide buffers—often around 50 feet—between heavy equipment and anything on foot or in a truck, and they unload in a set sequence, moving down the face in order rather than letting drivers pick their own spot, so a dozer never ends up working right next to a truck that is actively dumping.

The blind-spot problem that exists on the road gets worse here, because the machinery is bigger, louder, and frequently operating in reverse. There are documented cases of drivers stepping out of the cab during unloading and being struck by a compactor or dozer backing up, even when the backup alarm was working and the operator had checked the mirrors—the driver simply was not in view. That is why most landfill safety programs now tell drivers to stay in the cab, seatbelt on, through the entire tipping process, and only get out once they have been waved into a marked safe zone.

Tipping itself carries real risk. Raising a loaded trailer shifts a huge share of the vehicle’s weight onto the rear axle in seconds, and the ground at an active face is rarely as solid as pavement. Soft, uncompacted, or rain-soaked spots can let a trailer sink or lean as it rises, and an uneven load or an off-camber angle can be enough to roll the whole truck. Wind adds another wrinkle—a raised trailer body catches air like a sail, and a gust from the side can tip a trailer that would otherwise have held steady. Drivers who try to jar a stuck load loose with sudden acceleration or braking often make the vehicle less stable, not more.

The ground itself can fail. 91TV that has not fully compacted can shift or give way under the weight of a vehicle or a person, and landfill fatalities have resulted from exactly that kind of collapse. Because the surface of a working face changes daily as new material comes in, a driver cannot assume it will behave the way it did the last time they were there.

Decomposing waste also produces landfill gas, mostly methane, which can build up in pockets or migrate underground and create an explosion risk. On top of that, items that should not be in the waste stream in the first place—lithium batteries, aerosol cans, flammable chemicals—can ignite on contact with compaction equipment, and a fire in loose refuse spreads fast.

Underground fires are the worst case: they can burn for weeks, weaken the ground from below, and go unnoticed until something collapses. And despite the rules against it, hazardous material still ends up in the waste stream—batteries, industrial chemicals, medical waste, sharps. Drivers and ground crews can come into contact with any of it through direct handling, dust, or a puncture injury, particularly when a load needs to be inspected or manually cleared.

What Actually Reduces the Risk
As different as the route and the working face are, the pattern behind the worst incidents is nearly identical in both: a person on foot ends up in the path of a vehicle or machine that did not see them in time. The controls that actually move the needle follow from that pattern pretty directly:
• Staying in the cab whenever possible, rather than working on foot near moving equipment
• Trained spotters and clear, consistent hand signals for every backing maneuver
• Strict separation distances between trucks and heavy equipment at the working face
• A defined, sequenced traffic pattern instead of drivers choosing their own unloading spot
• Back up alarms, cameras, and side guards on both trucks and heavy equipment
• High-visibility clothing, hard hats, and cut-resistant gloves for anyone on foot
• Gas monitoring and a real fire-response plan at the landfill itself
• Changing directions of routes to eliminate the need to backup as much as possible
• Changing backup alarm to a white noise sound to eliminate the complacency or immunity to the standard backup alarm sound.

For an individual driver, the practical lesson is that the kind of alertness that keeps you safe in neighborhood traffic—checking mirrors, working with a spotter, driving defensively—is not enough once the truck reaches the working face. Ground stability, equipment blind spots, and the sheer density of machinery moving around you call for a different kind of caution and treating the landfill like just another stop on the route is where a lot of these incidents start.
