Washington residents will soon see a different setup at the curb as state law will require three different waste bins for residential homes by 2030: green, blue and grey. The changes came from the Organics Management Law passed in 2022 and the Recycling Reform Act passed in 2025. The goal is to cut organic material going into landfills by 75 percent by 2030.
“There’s been updated to the organic management law. And essentially what that says by 2030 if you have garbage service you also have to have a green bin. That will definitely create more cost at the curb,” said Brian Coddington, regional manager with Sunshine Disposal and Recycling in Spokane Valley.
Coddington explained that the state had been pushing to divert more material away from landfills for reuse and repurposing. That change included a larger role for organic waste collection. “The state is kind of undergoing a change in thinking. Trying to make a concerted effort to divert things from the landfill for reuse and re-purposing of items,” said Coddington, “The green will be a requirement. In 2030, you will have to offer organic service where the garbage services offered and be called what they call non-elected. So it will be required.”
