Peoria County officials celebrated the opening of a new transfer and recycling station that will play a key role in handling the county’s waste for years to come. Officials held a ribbon cutting and open house at the Peoria Transfer and Recycling Station at 4349 W. Southport Road in Pottstown.

The facility officially opened June 8 after receiving permission to operate from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency earlier that month. The transfer station helps fill the gap left by the closure of Peoria City/County Landfill #2, which stopped accepting waste in April 2025 after operating since 1998.

Peoria County has previously estimated the station will handle residents’ waste needs for about 10 years while work continues on Landfill #3.
